InsectsandSpiders > Patrick Porter  > insects > Pretty Insects, Mostly
I always carry a camera in the truck and sometimes get lucky and happen upon interesting insects. I hope these images show a little of their beauty. Educational use of these images is permitted with the appropriate credit. Commercial use without permission is prohibited.

Fly on flower. The orange things on the front of the head are antennae. Probably Pelteria robusta.
Paralyzed female Syrbula montezuma being dragged along by a Prionyx sp. Sphecid wasp. This rather small wasp first stung the grasshopper then carried it back to the nest, which is below ground. I watched as the wasp grabbed the grasshopper with its mandibles (evident in the photo) and dragged it in to the ground. An egg will be deposited in the body of the paralyzed grasshopper and the resulting wasp larva will consume the still-alive grasshopper as it grows. Insect identifications were done by Paul Alvarado Lenhart, Texas A&M University.
Mermiria bivitatta males. Identification by Paul Alvarado Lenhart, Texas A&M.
Cast skin of a cicada after it has left the ground. An adult cicada emerged from this skin. It rather reminds me of a gargoyle perched above the entryway of a church in France.
Just another perched dragonfly. The Texas Tech dragonfly expert identified this as the Comanche Skimmer (Libellula comanche).
Fly on flower. One luxury we often don't get with insect macro photography is the chance to follow the Rule of Thirds. Or as I call it, the Suggestion of Thirds. This photo is one of the rare exceptions.
Coccinella septempunctata (C7) lady beetle on alfalfa
crab spider feeding on a southern corn rootworm beetle (12-spotted cucumber beetle).
